Dear friends,
I am a novice grower with phalaenopsis orhids and I have had my first plant for nearly three months. The plant and most of its beautiful flowers are looking very well. The plant itself seems very happy and I check its general condition regularly. We are now having very warm, summer weather in Auckland, New Zealand which my orchid is enjoying.
However, I noticed very small regular, circular brown or dark spots on three of the oldest flowers of the 14 flowers. I thought at first that they were possibly fly dirt or just the beginning of the decline of the flower. The flowers with the spots look quite healthy and there are just about 10-12 spots on each affected flower. The spots certainly do not cover the flower and as I have said, they are very small.
Today, at home, I read in an orchid manual that dark brown or black spots can be fungal and it is important to remove the affected flowers immediately.
I have done this today and the other 11 flowers are unblemished.
The plant has fortunately 8 new buds and while it was distressing to remove three of the blooms I hope that I have done the sensible thing.
Thank you in advance for any advice.
Kind regards,
Robert.
