Newest of Newbies feeling my way through Root Rot

Hi all.
Just discovered the website. First post here. Please excuse my profound ignorance. I was given an orchid - no idea what varietal. It had limp leaves that won't stand upright, and lost two biggest leaves after they wrinkled and turned yellow.
I pulled it from the pot and found, based on what I learned from the forums, pretty profound root rot. I've trimmed off most of the damaged roots. It still has some air-roots that are shriveled, but still green. I have attached pics of the now-trimmed orchid.
I've read about full water culture for ICU. Is that what I should try here? Or should I re-pot in new substrate? (Old was pretty muddy, so must have been quite degraded.)
I have never had an orchid before, so no instruction is too simple. Would like to save the poor thing.
What do the experts recommend?

Welcome from Ontario, Canada! I would re-pot it in fresh medium but others might have a different opinion.

Welcome from Florida! It is a phalenopsis. No idea which one as you would need to see the flower and even then not easy to identify. As Chris said you can either repot in fresh orchid medium or as you mentioned try water culture. There is a lot of information on water culture on Google.

Hello and welcome. I'm kind of a newbie myself.
That is a phal. You've removed it from the former medium (probably the stuff it was in from the store) - that is good. You did a great job cleaning the roots. Yes you do have a couple of rotten roots. The green ones look very healthy and I see nubs for some other new roots coming along. I would recommend sanitizing either a pair of scissors or a razor with alcohol and cutting the brownish, squeasy roots off. Don't do anything else with the roots. To be safe you might squirt some 3% hydrogen peroxide solution on the roots only. Let it dry on a clean plate or paper towel, then plant in new medium. I had one that had NO roots back in October and it has roots now.....so yours is looking okay. I prefer semi hydroponics as a potting medium but a good quality bark will do well. Just remember you should probably plan on repotting every 2 years or so. I did not do that and that's why my oldest (6 years) phal had no roots. I have learned so much from tutorials I'd found on You Tube. I learn something new every day. Good luck to you from Massachusetts.
