Since that one's a cross between a Phal and a Sarcochilus, I would start by supplying conditions that would benefit the two: medium to low light, excellent air movement, and humidity around 60%. Keep temperatures between 45 - 85 F and let the root zone dry to bare dampness before rewatering. I couldn't find any info at all about this on a Google search, but those conditions are where I would start if the plants were mine. Not much help, I know, but......

Sarchochilus is an Australian native, I believe, so maybe Tim (bench72) can help more about them and give you some better details.

Hi All,

I've searched both Australian Orchid Review and Orchids Australia (at least all the editions that I have) and there doesn't seem to be any issues on Sarconopsis. There are a number of issues on Sarcs so maybe finding out the parents may help.

As far as what Louis said, it all sounds good to me. Sarcs with the exception of cecilae are all shade lovers. And yes, loads of humidity, as well as lots of air movement.

Good luck with the Sarconopsis and sorry I can't be more help.

By the way, what is hybrid's name? I would love to know what they used as parents to get to the sarconopsis...

Well Bench 72 the breeding is Sarcochilus x Phaleonopsis

Sarconopsis Rita Anderson ( Sarc Lois x Phal rosenstromii )

Sarconopsis Noelene Russell ( Sarc Melba x Phal amabilis )

Sarconopsis ( Phal amabilis x Sarc Fitzhart ) ' Clone 2 & ' Party Time '.
Hope this tells you what you wanted

Lois = ceciliae x hartmannii

Melba=hartmannii x falcatus

Fitzhart= Fitzgerldii x hartmannii

Sorry don't know much about breeding on the Phal except amabilis is Australian Species

Hi Les,

Intersting stuff you got there.... looks like the phalaenopsis that they tend to use is P. amabilis (and depending on who u ask, rosenstromii is regarded as a variety of amabilis).

I wonder if the colours of the sarcs will come out or if the white of amabilis will be dominant in your crosses... also, what's the leaf shape like? Is it more like a Phal or the Sarcs?

The only bit of information I came across on this are a couple of pictures in Rentoul's Growing Orchids Book 4. A Sarconopsis Lavinia and Sarconopsis Aussie Gem. In both, the flowers are more like Sarcs in shape but the coulours were all white...

How big are the flowers? Some of the sarcochilus species are tiny minatures.

From what i believe the flowers are between Phalaenopsis and Sarcochilus in Size but i have not seen them myself ? Also the book you talk about i don't have it are you able to copy the pictures say scan and email them to me if possible i live in Sydney Australia well Near Picton to be exact.

I have managed to find a possible article i've been told it was in a Australian Orchid Review vol36,no3,September 1971 but as yet still trying to locate someone who may have a copy don't know what the Article looks like.

The Fitzhart x amabilis i am led to believe has a Maroon centre but as i said have not seen in flower.

Forgot to mention the bigger plant i have have bigger leaves than a Sarcochilus the smaller plants look more like a Sarcochilus suppose they will grow as big also they seem to grow taller than a Sarcochilus and i'm led to believe the spike is like a Phalaenopsis in Length

Well from what i have found out they appear to be between the two parent but the leaves when small look like Sarcochilus but as they become larger the leaves also grow as with the one i have waiting to see when it flowers to see what it look like the plant stands about 30cm and is a divison i was able to pick up
