Blc. Hawaiian Leopard "Mei-Ling"

Didn't care too much for this one, but with each new flower it's getting prettier. I kind of like it now!!!! Its first flowerings weren't as developed as its third.

Carol this doesn't look like Blc. Hawaiian Leopard, atleast not the lip, perhaps a hybrid with some epidendrum.

I'm going by the tag here, but as I say each bloom seems to be getting better. The lip just needs to open up, is that what you are saying.? This is a very new seedling.

I think yours is very pretty and they do get better with age---Don'T WE ALL! LOL Mine is very simular to yours. I love how long the blooms last. Believe me it is a keeper.

Hi Carol, I am not sure the name is right on your tag. Blc. Hawaiian Leopard has a darker orange color usually and many spots as well as a large lip. Or maybe this one is peloric or something? IDK. Here are a couple on the forum for you to compare yours too:

Regardless of the name, it is a pretty orchid bloom. And the color is so clean and bright. I wish I had it.

Bruce, assuming this is the correct name, it's quite possible that being this bright a yellow is normal for this particular clone.

Going by the tag is what we all do, Carol, certainly can't fault you there. Unfortunately, tags are sometimes wrong (with some vendors frequently wrong ) though I have no idea as to the reliability of whomever you received this.

Yes, the lip is the big issue -- as oxymoronic as that seems in this case. The lip on yours is ridiculously small for a Hawaiian Leopard -- at least as it appears in the pic. That lip, if nothing else, casts a strong shadow of doubt as to that being the correct name.

It is difficult to determent if your plant is or isn't Blc. Hawaiian Leopard "Mei-Ling".
The color and the spots on sepals and petals seems to match with other images on the www.
Definitely the lip has a problem. It doesn't match. Sometimes clones get defects, specially if it is a clone made from a clone.
If it is Blc. Hawaiian Leopard "Mei-Ling" your plant has such a defect, or as other member mentioned it is a hybrid made with Blc. Hawaiian Leopard "Mei-Ling". By the way the genus changed to Rhynchobrassoleya (Rby.) Hawaiian Leopard "Mei-Ling".

I looked it up in AQ and the name is right. Your flower looks a lot like this clone but it seems the lip has not opened completely or did not develop completely, it happens sometimes. Lip development is sometimes influenced by insecticides. If it blooms always the same may then its genetic and there's nothing you can do., over-cloning can be blamed. I suggest you hold a bit on the fertilizer (1/2 dose or skip one) and insecticides and watch closely for the next blooming.
