Tolumnia varigata

Not thrilled with the pic but it is the best I was able to do. And since the plant is now out of bloom, this is it. The only tol that I have been able to bloom. The colors are actually quite a bit darker than the last time it bloomed. That time the lavender color was just the faintest blush.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Paul...The picture is quite good, and the blooms are delicate & just perfect. May I ask "what conditions" you bloomed it under? I have three & have only had one "earned" bloom. Thanks...Betty

The photo is beautiful! What a cute orchid bloom. I am a Tolumnia killer. Wish I could grow these. It must be too hot here or I never figured out the right medium to go with the way we water.

Bruce, most of them are from low land, so I don't think hot/warm temperature will be your problem... if you ever try Tols again, grow them on mount and let it dry out totally between waterings. Good air movement is important. Light level is not a major thing for most of them IMO.

Thanks Tom. I tried two different ones. They were potted in very little medium so that they would dry out, but I still ended up killing them. I will have to try another mounted and see it that will work. Thanks!

Most of the folks I know who bloom tols well are greenhouse growers. Those same growers, just to add to what Tom mentioned, have their tols where they get a bit of cool down in winter months as the plants are right by/against a wall of their greenhouses. My suspicion is that lack of cooling may be why I find them so hard to bloom.

Betty, mine spend most of the year in a terr. Over the winter, I did put this one and another different tol in my bedroom window area between the window and the drape. This one bloomed, the other did not. So I can't say, if cooling is necessary, whether this method actually did the trick for the one or if it was just happenstance.
