Hi:
From what I read I really expected something worse! Plant looks like it has a chance. Never use bark alone because it tends to pack and decays more rapidly. Some charcoal and perlite would help but you potted it already so leave her alone. Water the media not the plant. Phalaenopsis rot from the crown easily. Also no fertilizer yet. You can also remove the bottom tray. Give it two weeks. if she shows signs of recovery go slow on the ferlilizer. Good job!

I don't have the same experience like many of this forum's members but I've learn from my mistakes.
I got 2 gorgeous blooming Phals for my birthday but I didn't know how bad their roots were.
So after a week or so,the buds started to fall off one by one and it was so frustating.
I didn't want to stress the flowers so I didn't repot or check roots until I'd lost all the buds and the leaves started to split right in the middle and became droopy.
Finally I checked the roots and no surprise they were brown and rotten.I've cleaned the dead stuff and repot but didn't want to cut the spikes...

After 2-3 weeks the situation was worse so I finally cut the spikes in a disperate way to save them.I just love their fabulous color which is deep dark hot pink!!
So be smarter than me,cut the spike

Hi -

I just got your pm, and have had a chance to go over the recent posts. Where one cuts the spike only involves the nodes whe you're trying to coax another spike from the one that's already there - when we say cut the spike , we mean cut it back all the way, as far as you can without damaging other part of the plant. It looks like a very pretty phal. You know, after you cut the spike, you can put it in a vase and sometimes the blooms will revive and give you another pretty show to enjoy. Not all orchid mixes are the same - your phal should be in a bark mix with other additives that will help delay decomposition and help with drainage. You can check whether the pot drains sufficiently by watering it thoroughly and watching how quickly the water runs out from below. It should almost flow right through. Also, many of us use styrofoam peanuts as the bottom layer, which helps to promote free drainange. If your repotted phal seems to be in the right stuff, leave it alone - if your orchid mix doesn't have good-sized chunks of bark, charcoal, lava rock or perlite or whatever, and has anything resembling ordinary potting soil, you' really need to repot it, traumatic as that may be.
