Vanda bud problem

i have several vanda that have spiked numerous times but recently they spike and when the buds are ready to open, they become dry and brown and drop. Nothing has changed in their environment. Thoughts?

I don't mess with Vanda types as I live in too dry of climate for them to thrive and bloom, so I can't help.

But I can say if you have any pictures to post, that always helps diagnose problems.

1. I would Check for any infection/pests.
2. humidity factor (vandals require at least 50% humidity)
3. any source of gases/chemicals near-by could harm them as well.

I’m in south Florida, too, and use to have the same thing happen with many of my vanda spikes. I think the likely culprits are thrips. Too small to see, but an infestation of these suckers will ruin buds and tender new growth. I now prophylactically spray emerging spikes and buds with BAYER ADVANCED Dual Action Rose & Flower Insect Killer. Gentle enough not to damage buds or flowers, but zaps the thrips. I give ‘em a spritz or two every 4-5 days until the flowers open.
