Meet my Ficus Ginseng bonsai. I bought it at a big box store about 2 years ago in a normal (not bonsai) pot. I experimented, and potted it in the black bowl I bought at the same store that day, after drilling a draining hole in the bottom.
At first I kept it inside...it was furious! In 2 weeks it lost 80% of its leaves and I was very disappointed...
Then I decided to change the light and the watering schedule, kept it closer to a window and watered it more frequently. It responded with some hesitant new growth, but still looked quite...bald. My husband, George, called it Pinhead
As a last resort I decided to keep it outside for the summer, where it got watered every day from the lawn sprinklers at dawn. It exploded with new growth! Finally, I had found the secret. Ignore it and treat it like a forgotten pot.
Now I keep it indoors for the winter, as it finally got chilly here in Athens (15C) this week. I will keep up the frequent watering, contrary to the common advice to water it only when dry. That for me seems to make the bonsai go into shock and shed leaves.
Well now it is finally symmetrical and beautiful...enjoy!
