I received a cattleya mounted on a cedar shake, shingle type of wood and I really liked it so I bought a bale of shingles at the home supply store (cedar undercoarse) and started hanging plants up. It is so easy and I got a ton of cedar for $9.95. A friend of mine goes through their odds and ends wood that they mark down and gets it even cheaper.

I drill 2 holes on the bottom of the wood so I can put the orchid there and stick a plant tie through the holes to hold it in place, and 1 hole at the top to put a hanger through. I wrap a bit of moss around the orchid and tie it onto the cedar. The wood is very soft so you can get through it even if you don't have a drill, but a drill is very fast. It was very easy and I hadn't really done much mounting with orchids before. The orchid mounted below is a little ascofinetia and it really likes the cedar
