Dend new spikes?

I think the growth in the first picture is new aerator roots. That is a good sign. I have a den in the same condition, and was wondering if I should cut the canes or toss it. There are no leaves on them, and have not been any in a while, but the canes are still green. I was thinking that maybe that canes were taking up too much energy for new growth, but now I am pretty sure. Going to be cutting my canes shortly.

An old dendrobium cane will divert its own nutrient reserves to feed active growth. This applies to all sympodial orchids.
Cutting off the old cane will just take away the additional food supply of the new growths and make it much more difficult for the young canes to grow.

Thanks everyone. This particular cane has been leafless since I purchased it. There were aboutt 5 canes total on a small pot. I decided to re-pot as an experiment to see if it won't die on me since every plant that I laid my hands on in the past died. I never gave up on it because the cane stayed green and firm although it did not have any leaves.


I will post more photos in a few days see if you guys can help me figure out what they are. I'm not even sure the difference between keiki and a spike.

Hello Everyone,

Here's an updated photo of the new growths. They look like new canes to me. The 3rd photo is it's sibling that I put on a different pot. Just glad that all my hard work and TLC is paying off.

Good growing - I'd say this dend is doing great! Just keep on doing what you've been doing!

Well, just found out that one of my Dens was hiding a little secret. I normally check them every day but I didn't notice 2 new growths that came out on this particular one until today. Poor thing trying to make it's way out of the ribbon that I put around it for support since the base is too thin and the middle and top part is like 4x thicker than the base. And with 2 new growths coming out I just hope that the base can support them.

Sorry just interference into this threads. I have attract to to photo that were posts. I also have the dendeobrium just like that, a the leave has fall down but the cane still green. So I cut cut it to do the node propagation.

Which is appropriate, do the propagation or let it self have a it on keiki.

I think it is a mater of choice. Whichever you would like to try.

Sure. Just don't get bleach-water on the roots and it can be used.
