    Default Grammatophylum scriptum

    Hey guys--

Picked this up at the local nursery for an incredible steal! The photo does not even come close to converying the size of this thing, its sitting in a 12 inch azalea pot! And I was out of room already!! Another large high light plant. I don't always think these things through......

It is down to only one spike (outta 3-4 depending on which one it was, saw it when they first got the shipment), but it is SO worth it as it has fourth new growths starting. This is a pretty good nursery, always have a very small but unique selection, although usually pricey.

Hah! Yeah Bruce, that's what I hear. Looking at the pics online they can just look beautiful. I can only imagine what it could look like next year with these 4 new growths, as long as I can treat it right.

*sigh* I just love the big ones though. I just need to change my living room into a conservatory to fit the cymbids and this....

These are really cool and the flowers are beautiful, but yeah they get really big. The University of Washington greenhouse here in Seattle has a Gramm. speciosum that they grow in a 100 gallon container-can you imagine repotting ?

Very beautiful specimen of a scriptum! Scriptums flower very regularly and the size is manageable but can't say the same thing for Gram speciosum. As the Orchidlady says it's huge : I have personally seen some in their natural habitat hanging down almost 15ft from the forks of trees! They however don't flower regularly; even 2 or 3 years once. Here many of us grow them in the ground out in the open - just too big for pots.

Good pick Derek, your nursery sounds very interesting.

Here's a pic of the gigantic, 12 feet in diameter, 200 pounds Grammatophylum speciosum in display at the Brooklyn Botanic garden.
Since we're on the grammo subject
