why are my leaves going yellow (moth orchid)

Hey Howard......I hope your Phal is back up to par soon. Not to over water, I always wait to water until I see the roots return to silvery/white. This root covering is called velamin. Then obviously the roots turn green when wet. This is an example of a healthy root. ......Cut out any mushy/black roots, fungicide if needed then repot in bark. Ive also heard that Phosphate (the middle number in fertilizers. ei 1-1-1 or 11-35-15) Is good for blooms and root growth. Since you have no spike nor blooms. This might help root growth if you water or mist the roots with a weak feed, weekly. Maybe 1/4 what it says on the package.

Hi, Howard! Welcome to our group!
I think you did good by taking the plant out of the wet pot. I would now clean the dead roots and soak in Hydrogen Peroxide for about 10 min. After that I would leave it in low light bare root for a few days before potting in a pot with good drainage. Good luck and keep us posted!

hehehe! Nope, no blonde phal! Works like fungicide.

So I now have 3 orchids all sat in one pot! They only have a few roots each( about 8) with just fresh air around the roots I intend to just spray each day with water just to give plants a little moisture. I have moved away from window into middle of room where darker! do you think this will make leaves go back green and let plants develop nice new roots?

I am very new to this forum and orchid grow'n'çare as well. Unfortunately I am about to continue this thread as my Phal leaves started to become yellow. I put a tiny gallery of a my infected phal. Your advices how to cure are very welcome!

You might want to put this on a separate thread so it will get more attention. Based on the photos it looks like a fungal or bacterial infection. Fungal rot is common in Phals. Do you have access to fungicides/bacteriocides? It also looks like there are 2 plants in the pot. If this is the case I would separate them and put in individual pots. Then I would look at the roots of the infected plant, remove any rotted roots (dark, mushy) and leaves, and repot/treat the plant with fungicide/bacteriocide.

Hello Fortunatas, I see you are using spagnum moss for your planting medium. I do not have good luck whenusing sphagnum moss. The roots of my plants rot because the spagnum stays too wet for me. The roots of your phal look good around the edge of the pot. What do the roots in the middle of the sphag look like? What amount of light do your phals get each day?

Probably the easiest to find is hydrogen peroxide (H202). Soak the plant in it after removing as much of the rotted parts as you can. If the problem is more severe you can use things like Physan (brand name of a quaternary ammonium compound) or dithane.
