Phal. Noid + 3 others!

Just a quick snap of a solitary corner of the science club greenhouse at school. In this photo: a phal. NOID that my professor just got, a dendrobium we just rescued, along with 4 cattleya seedlings! Trying to raise the humidity a bit for just the orchids there with the pebbles,(we grow other plants in there too) and the water bottle has very dilute orchid fertilizer in it, its not just trash! (We didnt want others tossing it, thinking it was trash, even with a label on it).

Its super fun.
We are propagating 4 different orchid strains in flasks this week or next, 3 cattleya's and a bletilla striata. Makes for some fun free time when not studying.

I agree what a great program and am glad orchids are being included. There are a couple schools in my area that have greenhouses and the kids sell bedding plants in the Spring that they have grown to help support the program.

Yeah, my old highschool had a greenhouse and they regularly sold coleus in many different colors. The horticulture students got pretty good a hybridizing these for amazing color varieties. Makes me wish I took those classes back then...

That is one of the goals, to sell off some of these orchid seedlings in a year or so. (What else would we do with several hundred orchids?!?!).
This is the science club project, we call it the community garden. Im a biology major, for premed but ive always enjoyed plants and gardening for a long time. My first semester i got to take botany, which was a blast! The main professor in charge of this project is a plant biologist (amongst many other things!), and we are conducting research on saw palmetto and st johns wort. Those two projects are for either the summer undergrad program, or the semester long undergrad research class. Im going to be doing the summer long program this summer, cant wait! But ya, the greenhouse project isnt a class per se, but a few premed people along with myself have taken this as our on going project. Very fun stuff! I feel very fortunate that my school has this.
