Phalaenopsis problem, please help!

Hello everyone,

I’m new to the forum and I have an important question.
2 weeks ago I got some Phalaenopsis for my mother, 3 different colors potted separately and put together in the same arrangement.

After 7 days they were watered with tap water, placed on an elevated place above the sink until they all the excess water was drained. They have been placed on a table near a window, plenty of indirect light, the room is not dry, there’s some humidity. There’s no excess heat from a heater, my father smokes occasionally in that room.

I have attached some pictures for you to see, there has been new blooms since I got them, 3 new blooms and 4 sick yellow buds that will eventually fall off. Any advice and help is much appreciated.

It's called bud drop. Causes are many, for instance, overwatered before you got them, temperature differance between your house and the store where you got them, overheated in the car on the trip home. Plus dozens of unknown things can trigger blasting buds.

I think its the change in weather at this time of the year in our area. Lately, it has been getting cold at night so maybe if you are switching off the heater at night, this might be the cause. I have a heater in my Orchid room on a thermostat, but I switched it off a while back as it was getting warm, but since lately the weather changed again, I switched it on again after noticing some buds shriveling on my Phals.

before my post appeared on the forum, i did some reading and research on this forum, and i found out that many things can cause buds falling on the Phals...like fumes and gases released by fruits for example apples, cause there was a big apple bowl in the same room as the Phals.

I think the water isn't a problem...cause i 14 days they have been watered twice and the way i watered them is that i placed them on an inverted plastic drainer and poured water slowly in each pot, about 0.5 liters and let the drain (is it a good technique or am i doing anything wrong?) should i water less frequently?

The Phals came in a basket and i took them out to check the roots, i found a type of mesh bag in the bottom, i removed it because i thought i was letting a proper air flow to the roots. and the Styrofoam wasn't heavy enough to hold the basket around the 3 plastic pots. i placed some rocks in the basket instead after i washed them with some soap, detergent and water and i let them dry. the roots at the bottom of the pots are vivid green.
