Phal Question

I have had my 3 phals outside on the deck for the past 6 weeks. I haven't had them in direct sun. Daytime temps have averaged in the 70's and nighttime in the 50's. Over this period of time the leaves have darkened quite a bit. The plants seem healthy and have good looking roots.
Is this too much of a temperature range?

Welcome Jusnew. The temperature sounds perfect for phalaenopsis. If the leaves are still turgid and not limp, and the roots re healthy then you have nothing to worry about.

I would be concerned about temperatures going into the 50s over a long period of time. Phals don't like to go below 60. Occaisional 50s is okay, but may start to go downhill over the long term.

I was thinking about bringing them inside. I had read that 10 + degree difference in daytime/nighttime temp would encourage them to bloom.

I think a few nights in the 50's will not hurt but don't let them get much colder.

Welcome Jusnew. The temperature sounds perfect for phalaenopsis. If the leaves are still turgid and not limp, and the roots re healthy then you have nothing to worry about.

Welcome Mike! where are you located? did you buy your phals from a local vendor and how long have you had them? Do watch for low 50s for extended periods.

I'm in Spokane, Washington. East side of the state if you are not familiar with it.
Bought the orchids in San Luis Obispo last year.

Thought I'd post a picture of a phalaenopsis farm here. The farm only breeds and grows phalaenopsis for the local and export market. It is situated in the Cameron Highlands, elevation 5000 ft and the day temp is in the low to mid 70 F while the night temp is between 53 - 58 F. These temperatures are constant throughout the year as it situated very close to the Equator. The grow area is very heavily shaded, light levels around 800 ft candles, and is completely shielded from the rain. The annual rainfall here is between 100 - 120 inches.

I guess the photos and the data/information you provided regarding the growing conditions of the phalaenopsis farm in your area is a big help.

That is sure one hell of a huge phalaenopsis farm ....
