Phalaenopsis orchids I don't know what to do

Hello,

I have three Phalaenopsis orchids. I am not too sure if my first one is doing all that well. It looks like its has 2 maybe 3 keiki's on it, but I don't know for sure. I took out the old sphagnum moss and put new in, trimmed all the dead roots and haven't been watering it as much as before. I am wondering do I take spike off, if so can I keep it in water until one of the keiki's are big enough to plant. Not take it off. Do something completely different?

Hi and welcome to the forum. You will learn alot here I am sure from the friendliest people around. If it was my orchid I would repot it in bark mix. Moss can hold moisture too long and cause roots to rot. Your plant has a very poor root system and needs to produce new roots and recover. Personally I would forget the keikis this time and concentrate on saving the plant. Letting the keikies develope can take energy from the plant and make it harder for it to produce new healthy roots. It is way too early to plant the keikies and they will not develope by putting the stem in water. Keikies can take a long time to develope and need to have several roots over an inch long before they can be removed from the mother plant and be planted to grow on their own.. Hi there. I had a similar prob recently with some phals I rescued from my friend. They were origionally planted in sphagnum moss. I repotted in bark, cut off all the manky roots and soaked the bark in water before I repotted. I think the problem was the plants were too wet, yellow leaves and rotten roots indicated this. Once they were repotted I didnt water at all to encourage new roots for 2 weeks. Then I lightly misted every other day for about a week. Then I just watered about once a week. After about a month they looked a lot happier and were producing new little roots. None of the plants had keikis but 2 had flower spikes which I just left as they were. Good luck. Thanks for the advise! I took the spike off and repotted in a Phalaenopsis Bark mix I found at boxstore. I have a little nub starting to grow on the back of the second leaf, like where a spike might form. I am hoping its a new root!

I've never had a plant in the bark mix, how do I tell when it will need water?

I have one question Hannah, did you mist after the after the two weeks of not watering or when you started to see new roots?

No I didnt mist but then I dont bother misting any of my orchids as I live in
England and its damp and humid enough here already! The idea of witholding water is to force the plant to make new roots to search for it so maybe dont mist. Thanks for the typing compliment! Good luck im sure theyll be fine.

Hi Christine and WELCOME to Orchid Talk! Hannah & Bill are both giving you great advise. Saving the orginal plant should be of first concern. I hope the bark mix had perlite & charcoal in the mix. Remember to soak the media overnight before re-potting;then DO NOT water for seven to ten days! ( mist twice a day, though! ) The phals require a humidity tray also. Good luck...Betty :-)

Thank you for all the help! I thought I'd give you an update on my Phalaenopsis. It's doing great as far as I can tell! Sooooo happy to see 5-6 new roots and a new leaf. I am assuming that its normal for it to have dropped a few. (I also tired an experiment, when I took the spike off I put in a small bottle with very diluted fertilizer. It looks like I might be able to put it in some bark soon.)
