coelogyne ovalis...stinky??

Hi there, I just got one of these, but I have now discovered some information telling my the flowers are fragrant... in the wrong way! Can anyone shed anymore light on this subject? (if they are too stinky i might not have it for long as have 2 flower spikes coming.... eek!)

Too funny! Yes, some orchids don't especially smell too great. It depends one what it's pollinator is. If a plants' pollinator is a fly, you will likely have a flower that smells like a trash can on a hot day. Some aren't too smelly though. If you can't tolerate the smell perhaps it's time to sell it to someone who will love it inspite of it's stench. Good Luck...

Just be thankful you dont have a Stapelia leendertziae! i have one of these, and it just so happens that it prefers late January here for flowering! EEEWW! That is the hottest part of summer! I get neighbors complaing about the stench fom across the road for goodness sakes, and the local council came by a few years ago because they beleived we were concealing a dead animal! I told them to smell the bloom....lets just say...our loo needed cleaning afterwards.

oh believe me I am very thankful! I can only just put up with the stench coming from my boyfriends direction after a curry so im hoping its no as bad as that! I have a fragrant Noid phal, its flowers are peachy coloured and it smells a bit like lemon sherbert, its delicious! Any other thoughts on this particular coelogyne?

I had one that smelled of cherry-ripe, after i smelled the phal when i got it home, i just had to go and buy a cherry-ripe....temptation was too great, especially when it comes to chocolate or cherries, or both!
