It's the one that looks like a small octopus - blue/purple oval petal up top and 4 green tail-like petals at bottom. It's a fascinating plant - I have one and won a Blue (First) ribbon at my second OS judging this month. Let me know if you'd like more info - I've learned a lot about it recently.

Epidendrum is decades ago, Prosthechea is more like 6 months ago. In between there was Encyclia. Personally, i prefer to keep calling it Encyclia (good on ya mate!), as the name Prosthechea hasn't been 100% confirmed yet....too many people arguing.

Encyclia Green Hornet is a hybrid of E. radicans (?) and E. cochleata or a cross between two good specimens of E. cochleata Cultivation should be intermediate, i keep mine on the fridge.

Great Green Hornet, one i wouldnt mind having to accompany my cochleata

Personal eccentricities aside, the gorgeous plant in question has, in fact, been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society since 1995 as Prosthechea Green Hornet. According to the RHS, the only genus synonym is Epidendrum. It is a Prosthechea hybrid, the seed parent being Prosthechea cochleata and the pollen parent, Prosthechea trulla.

Thanks for the opportunity to clear this up, at least for myself, Jordan. It is good practice to know the accepted nomenclature and taxonomy, particularly when questions concerning cultivation arise, or when one has a particularly good specimen to show.

Well i say screw the RHS, they seem to change the names on a whim....I have always known Prosthechea as Encyclia, the latter being the synonym, although the RHS contradicts. Typical LOL

Now you have undertaken the responsibility to provide a FINAL WORD on all orchid names so we can go to YOUR list to settle any ambiguities. Good luck.
