I think that the odd knobs might be what the seedling looks like before it grows leaves or roots and that they're just sort of clumped together. I think you may find that if you plant a clump with a leave, roots, and knobs, that you may end up with more than one plant--or you may not. I'm not at all an expert, but found similar things in the flasks I've had.
