Looks like a great job potting the flasklings up. Man! From the size of that one seedling, you KNOW you've got one Phal out of that deal for sure! (only kidding, I'm sure most will do very well).
Good Growing,
Tony
Ha ha! You folks are funny. And all I can really say to the jokes is: I WISH!
Cathy, at 6 foot tall with a size 11 (43 european) shoe, I would love to be more munchkin-like. But at least I can reach the back of the benches in my friend's greenhouse.
And Tony--From your keyboard to G-d's ears! In my collection size is no guarantee, in fact the bigger they are, the harder they fall. You should see the butcher job I did to a specimen mini-catt. Or the desolate forests of desicated pseudobulbs on some of my more mature intergenerics. Or the once-proud sunset phal that is now crown-rotted and down to three leaves.![]()
I figure I'm gambling with the law of averages with my flasks.
Thanks all. So far, they are all good. I will update when something starts happening.
Did I mention I never throw anything away? The nursery, from left to right: various salad boxes cobbled together (my enc. hybrid had leaves wound many times round the inside of its flask), birthday cake plate, and donut hole box.
I'm a hoarder of all things "see-through", too![]()
I have killed many deflasked seedlings and the turning point for me was when I stopped keeping them so moist. I was told that when watering I should just use a teapsoon or two of water and not soak the whole pot. Once I started doing that they stopped rotting.
These seedlings are lucky to have you as mama. Trish these orchids are majorly cute. AL
Why, Al!You're so sweet! . . .but. . .misguided. LOL Sadly, most of the not-quite-formed flasklets were the first to perish. The others have grown new roots and leaves, but they suffer occasionally under my insecurity about sphag. I potted the biggest one alone with a fine bark and sphag mix. It isn't growing as fast as some of the others, but I wish I had potted them all with some bark or coco husk. My encyclias?? Have no idea if they are happy. They don't die, but they don't grow either.
What a great thread!! Can't wait to see what happens with this. Maybe you're growing alien life forms![]()
wow. i've been tempted before to try getting a flask of something, but so far have not done it. cool photos. thanks for posting.
This thread is fantastic! I went from "OMG, how CUTE!!" to... "Nah, they look fine to me..." to... "Well, that ONE does look kind of odd..." to "HUH. That's really freaking weird. They DO look deformed..." You'll have all of us holding our breath over here waiting to see what happens with these little creatures! Thanks so much for sharing pics of your, um, Frankenstein babies with us. Oh, wait...I shouldn't have said that...all babies are beautiful to their mommies...I mean...your cute, darling, slightly weird-looking babies... ;-)
