S. plicata needs well-drained soil containing lots of organic matter, very bright light and ample watering when in growth to flourish. It does not like soggy soil. However, this species is a scale magnet when it is unhealthy, because the scales tend to stick to the creases in the plicate leaves and become difficult to dislodge. If that happens, cut off all remaining leaves, spray and let it regenerate new growths.
