Rlc. Greenwich 'Elmhurst' (so they said)

Jose - where are the white markings? One of my blooms has a good bit of white around the margin of the lips - probably not the right markings, but I wonder whether it's a different clone that's been named - I know, for instance that there is a clone named Killarney that looks a lot like 'Elmhurst' - and I know there are Greenwich clones that are all green ('Misty Lime', for one) I'll have to look up the parents to see where this purple lip goes in and out of the genetics. Thank you for the info. The bloom measures 6 1/4" across, whatever that is in cm. The other one - the all-green floofy, has blooms that measure 7 1/2 inches across - the largest I've seen in my short experience.

Thanks, Jose - I can see exactly what you mean, now by the white markings. Mine definitely doesn't have that. How sure are we that it's a Greenwich? Enough so that i could enter it without worrying about having usurped a prior clone?

I'm an AOS student judge and I use AQPlus to verify the plants they post. I also Jay's site with species. After learning the problem you had with judging and pictures my interest is that you may have every chance to have your plants judged correctly and if so, awarded. That goes for everybody, if I can help in any way I will do. Sometimes I make mistakes like we all do but that's part of the learning curve. In that respect this site is a wonderful learning experience. Doing research on the NOID's makes me feel kind of good.I admire the knowledge you have collected in such a short time, something that took me years, that says a lot. If in any way any of your plants gets an award and I helped the feeling would be the best prize or recognition I could get. But that's enough, yep, I'm quite sure both your greens are Greenwich and Ports of Paradise, and that both are good. If you ever move to Florida that would be great 'cause that's my region (Florida Caribbean) and perhaps, perhaps, I would be honored to judge one of your plants (but I'm tough!). All my love to you and Bigfoot.

Hi Jose - I wrote you a long response to your email about 5 hours ago, but I was on the internet network at the hospital and it lost the whole website, etc, so I'll give you a condensed version. First of all, Phillip and I have thought the world of you ever since we started to exchange messages on OT - and that was certainly before we had any idea you were student judge. It has been based entirely on your kindness, humility, and tremendous experience and knowledge. I did suspect that you had some significant background in orchids just because your breadth of knowledge and quiet certitude suggested that strongly to me. I can't express how grateful I am for your support and interest - and I'm so glad you shared a little of your background with us. It's exciting to have such a solid id on these two green catts; they came to me at a difficult time and have given me so much joy that they are very special members of my collection. I have had Orchidwiz ready to program on my pc for months now, but I have a Mac and I'm intimidated with the extra installation steps, so my resources have been limited so far. I really consult as many books, articles, members, and websites as I can before I raise an issue - so it's been a bit of work - good thing I love it so much! You know, I was a tax lawyer for years and non-tax lawyers generally find it impossibly difficult and enormous to comprehend - well, the study of orchids has tax law beat by light years in its sheer size and complexity! Which is probably why I'm trying to learn it as well and as quickly as I can - the personal experience part just has to unfold as time goes on. I've read the AOS Judges Handbook and the Guidelines for Photographers in detail; my Miltassia award (issued on Sept.10th) is still unaccounted for - I've heard nothing at all and been told it's probably because the photo hasn't been submitted. I know that photographers have deadlines for submission and those have passed, but I don't think she's sent it in - probably because she used photo-editing far beyond what's accepted and is simply stalling. I have no doubt there is some deliberate intent to hold up, or even prevent this award from being issued at all. I've contacted AOS headquarters about it and they were supposed to refer it to the head of the Atlanta Judging Center, but I've heard nothing at all - and that was well over a month ago. Just wanted to let you know the saga continues and I have no idea what to do, except to settle down and wait, believing that things will sort themselves out eventually. It's a strange feeling, but I am well over the resentment I first felt, so it's not so bad.

It IS impressive that you're a student judge - it takes less time to become a Ph.D. than to attain full AOS judge status! I have no doubt you're one of the best there is, and I would be delighted to end up in your region. I think it will happen eventually, but I don't have a time frame now that Phillip has had this setback. By the way, he sends his love to you and wants you to know he's on the mend (barely), so not to worry too much. It's going to be a long period of convalescence, however.

Rlc. (Rhyncholaeliocattleya) Greenwich = C. (Lc.) Ann Follis x Rlc. Lester McDonald. The clone "Elmhurst" has 2 white markings on the lip that yours doesn't. Awarded clones measure from 18.5 cm to 13.9 cm. Yours is an unnamed clone but a good one, if you submit it for judging inscrbe it as a regular Greenwich. Definitely Rhyncolaelia digbyana on it's background (good eye!).

'Elmhurst' appears to be quite variable in the amount and distribution of color on the lip, or 3/4 of the pics out there are mis-labeled. It is the kind of trait that could depend on light and temerature during flower development. Shape seems to be less variable though, and this one looks right. I have no doubt this is Greenwich, and quite possibly 'Elmhurst'.
