Phillip's homecoming sesquipedale has its first bud opening today. We are still holding our collective breath that it will continue to grow and eventually emit the famous fragrance. This first photo shows the bloom closeup - the 2nd shows that the nectary tube is already touching the ground - without measuring it with the full curves included, it measures 1 1/2 inches long!
We have called this one Mr. Darwin, since it is already showing that there would have to be a crazy-looking moth to get its proboscis all the way down this tube. I've seen the drawings of Xanthopan morganii praedicta, but it's still an incredible feat. We are completely fascinated by it.
Update as of 12.27.11: The following show a day's worth of growing - and I happened to get the sun on it - briefly. The two longest spurs as of today are 12.75" and !2.25" respectively - about an inch longer than yesterday:
