    Default Mr. Darwin's Orchid - 1st bloom!

Phillip's homecoming sesquipedale has its first bud opening today. We are still holding our collective breath that it will continue to grow and eventually emit the famous fragrance. This first photo shows the bloom closeup - the 2nd shows that the nectary tube is already touching the ground - without measuring it with the full curves included, it measures 1 1/2 inches long!

We have called this one Mr. Darwin, since it is already showing that there would have to be a crazy-looking moth to get its proboscis all the way down this tube. I've seen the drawings of Xanthopan morganii praedicta, but it's still an incredible feat. We are completely fascinated by it.

Update as of 12.27.11: The following show a day's worth of growing - and I happened to get the sun on it - briefly. The two longest spurs as of today are 12.75" and !2.25" respectively - about an inch longer than yesterday:

Thanks y'all - Phillip is quite pleased with it - no scent yet, but we are going away overnight tonight, so you can be sure the scent will arrive while we're gone!! Thank goodness the blooms last so long.

Can you post more pics of the flower/s when its open fully please and measurements.
I think your description of the spur length is wrong, can't be 1 1/2 inches ?? Do you mean feet ?

Sorry - typo - I meant 11 1/2". Actually, today it's a little over twelve. I will be very certain to post more photos and let you know how the fragrance turns out. Thanks for the correction.

Looking good so far! They're always so stunning when opened fully.
