You and Angie are absolutely right about "practicing" on an inexpensive orchid - I should have emphasized more that it took me FIVE of those before I moved on. You can learn a lot trying to rescue a sick orchid that will come in handy when you run into issues with a more expensive one. It IS possible to get inexpensive orchids that are beautiful and healthy - I guess my point was to encourage you to follow the natural progression that Angie referred to and that most, if not all of us have gone through, and on our own time and in our own ways. I just wanted you to know there's so much fun in store for you in the future.![]()
Not sure I understand your question, but no, I don't take photos of box stores and grocery stores around Atlanta - it's just a generic term for the huge warehouse-type stores that can carry anything from food to major appliances - and, of course, mini-phals. Do you not have them where you live?
Thank you all for your responses. I am excited about this hobby and eager to learn.
Gary
Best of wishes! It is an exciting, rewarding, and addictive hobby!![]()
Just wanted to post the final planting. I soaked the planting medium for 24 hours. Found the plastic pot and used a soldering iron to put holes in it. Now time will tell.

I love those leaves!
When possible, I like to use clear pots for Phals, too. It allows me to keep an eye on the root growth, plus, as I've read that Phal roots can photosynthesize, it's good that they can receive some light.
