Another thing Jason with being in the UK I found many paphs to spike during our colder months and then the bloody bud blasts ( falls off). Careful of draughts when you position your paph roth or any future paphs! Raising humidity in our artificially heated homes in winter time give and take a few months is a challenge and a half. This is where i failed with paphs and rot in crown and joint crevices. Dont bother spraying at all if i were you just place pot on tray of pebbles with water in making sure pot base sits above out of contact with water.

I can ensure humidity as i have one room specially setup just for that purpose but im slowly getting the feeling i will need a special setup to keep this plant perfect. Draughts i dont need to worry about as the whole house went through a full refurb not so long ago. I think i might start thread on them now and get as much update info on them as possible.

Definetly no to setting your money on fire Jason lol. Like Maura said our recurring grey days in the uk are great for paphs. As with all orchids their are always some special rules to follow, differing across the board.

Thanks Stacie - my collection has really grown and changed quite a bit since last summer. At that point I mostly had vinicolor (dark burgundy) and classic green and white Maudiaes, which come primarily from the Paph species callosum and lawrenceanum, which are members of the Barbatum Alliance. Since then, I have added paphs from the Insigne alliance, the Pardalopetalum alliance, Cochlopetalum, and Brachypetalum (and other that escape me at the moment). I think I now have about 40 paphs, and have also gotten into their South American counterpart species - Phragmipedium! For me, the slipper orchids are particularly addictive. I won an HCC/AOS recently with one of my vinicolors - I posted it on OT last week, I think - if you search my username, it should show up (just for interest, if you like). What Paph did you get? Does it have an id?

I hope I'm not posting this twice, my iPad did something weird and didn't post what I wrote. It is labeled a supersuk eureka. It has two buds, and what appears to be a third spike on the way. I also bought a phrag yesterday (labels fliquet 4n). We will see how I handle new plant challenges : )

Hi Stacie - Great choice! The actual id for that paph is Paph. Supersuk 'Eureka' AM/AOS. (What can I say, orchid hobbyists can be very picky about the details, especially when they are as significant as these). The id means that you have one of the plants raised from seeds and or pollen from the actual plant that was awarded an AM in 1979 - named 'Eureka' after the award was given. Paph. Supersuk is 1/2 paph. sukhakulii, 1/4 paph. mastersianum, and 1/4 paph. callosum - the hybrid Supersuk is only one generation removed from its species parents, which is relatively rare in paph hybrids. I have never seen a Supersuk itself for sale - only in hybrids using it along with another hybrid paph - Like Paph Raisin Pie. Nice find!

Your Phrag Fliquet 4N is an equally distinguished hybrid. It is the hybrid of Mem. Dick Clemens and Grande - which means that it will be a brilliant hue of red, and have longish dangling side petals. The 4N means that it is a tetraploid plant - which is a humongous topic in and of itself. I can get into it if you're interested.

I'm assuming you have resources on the differences in growing conditions for paphs and phrags?

Maura--shouldn't a paph labelled as Supersuk 'Eureka' be genetically identical to other Supersuk 'Eureka' plants, not an offspring (seed or pollen) from Eureka. Or, am I missing something?
