    Default Paph hirsutissimum var esquirolei

    This is its third rebloom and this time the flower has increased in size to 5 inches across and 3 inches vertically. However the colour is lighter than its last blooming, due probably to increased light level in the grow area. ( Geoff, the Dorsetman, has remarked on the influence of light on paph colour in 2 of his posts).

    There have been differing opinions on whether this is a hirsutissimum or whether it should be esquirolei, a separate species by itself. I'll take the coward's way out and tag it Paph hirsutissimum var esquirolei. BTW the stem is purplish in colour, a characteristic of esquirolei.

    Ouch.... Mine kicked the bucket... well, it was almost dead since I got it free from a big box store...(can't blame me! )

    I would have to say this is my new most favorite paph. It is beautiful, Yew Sung. Great photos.

    Thanks everyone for looking in and for your comments. When I bought this 3 years ago from a vendor in the highlands I doubted that it would bloom in the hotter lowlands where I live but it has really surprised me and a few friends here that it has bloomed without fail the last 3 seasons. Maybe climate change has something to do with it.My bellatulum dubbed the 'egg in the nest' paph has just opened. I bought it as BS plant just 4 months ago.

    BTW still on climate change, this is the first time in at least 30 years that we didn't have a dry season. Normally we have at least 2 months of dry weather from around mid-Dec to April and our lawns and playing fields are dusty and brown. Not so this year - we just had our lawn mowed yesterday!

    Quite nice Yew, one of the truer forms of esquirolei I've seen for some time. No outside influence.
