Ansellia africana first bloom

I got it as a only bid for $7+shipping $8 in January 2010, it finally bloomed for the first time. it can withstand draught, water, full sun. It does not grow superfast but it keeps growing, never a dead pseudobulb. seems one of the strongest orchids. I keep in on a southern window diring the cold monts and outside in full sun part of the day when it is warm. I originally potted in a broken coconut husk, now i just fill the holes with some bark, lava rock and scraps.

Nice buy and obviously worth the two+ year wait for blooms. These flowers say exotic and tropical to me big time. AL

Thanks - I think it needs to grow big before it flowers. I think when I received was 3 or 4 canes and could fit in a shoebox. I am glad it is spotted and has some greenish tone, I was worried that it would be plain white. Also I do not have a greenhouse but only windowsills and fire escape.

Oh, how awesome! What an interesting orchid. Flowers look like a Zygo/Vandaceous hybrid (if there were such a thing) and it grows on Dendrobium-like canes. I've never seen anything like this.

Very nice, the alba version of this plant is also very beautiful. Recently Ansellia has been bred to cymbidiums.

When uploading photos that are linked on the web that are larger than 700 x700 just untick the check box on the upload form that says" Retrieve remote file and reference locally" and the forum will link the image and resize it automatically.

I was trying to upload from my computer, it is faster than getting the URL for each image and copy and paste. I export my images at 900 pixels in general. wish they could be automatically resized to fit here.

Anyway Ansellia is one of my favorites. I have seen a couple at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden the flowers and growth habit is quite different one from the other. Anyway Ansellia do not seem so different or unusual, pretty similar to Cyrtopodiums some of which grow in Florida or obviously related to Grammatophyllum speciosum that has similar leaves, canes and flowers....

They are all part of the SubTribe of Cyrtopodiinae
