What does a new spike from the base look like?

Happy to say, my orchid is still doing well since repotting and I see new roots inside the pot. What does a new spike from the base look like? I still have the old one that lost its flowers a couple of months ago. I have a new "something" growing from the base of the plant...I think its a root. If this is a root, what should I do about the root growing over the leaf? It's gotten a little bigger since I took this pic and its staying on the leaf. Thanks much.
