You could help them out by orienting the developing spike toward the direction where the strongest light comes from. Naturally, the spike will grow toward where it senses the most light coming from. For cattleyas, lot of times, they just do what they want to do but having strong and evenly distributed light throughout the day definitely will help forming a pleasing looking flower arrangement on the spike!
