orchid germination medium question

Hi,

I made some orchid germination medium (OGM) a week ago, but used too much agar. This evening I am going to make again some germination medium but with not too much agar in it.

My question now is, if I could add the previously made OGM to the new one and mix it all, in order to incorporate the too strong OGM into the new OGM. And then heat-sterilize the new mix of new and old OGM. Can that work?

Hi, all fhe friends....i am a hobbist in orchid seed sowing and mericloning. I am working with dendrobium ripe seed from capsule, but the medium i am using labeled as ms ( 1962) has a chemical composition different of the reported in the original ms paper published in physiol. Plant (1962)....your opinion, please.

I am not certain you can mix a gelled one with a new one. Personally I would start again and use the right amount of agar. (5-7grams/litre)

As long as there is no gelling agent besides agar, and there are no complex organic additives that might be harmed by the process, there is no reason you can't combine the batches. You just need to heat enough to liquify the gelled medium, mix them, and proceed as usual. In microbiology or plant tissue culture it is very common to re-liquify prepared agar medium and make additions before use. There's no reason it should be a problem in the specific application of orchid seed germination.
