Tolumnia Ester Oka "Lake View"

thanks al. can't take much credit asside from 'not killing it yet' on this one, i got this one recently as a reward for that first one i bought. it now has 2 spikes opening on it and they have come out a nice deep red, since it is winter nights in the 40's i think it has made the flowers a bit smaller, a bit darker, but doing fine. i hope this yellow one does as well outdoors.

i got this on a special where the seller picked the plants, but i was allowed to suggest colors and i asked for yellow and mentioned red. i think i got a great seller's pick!

the peach part is actually on the backside of the lip. the red spots are on the front. this picture was taken as the sun was coming up, shining right through the flowers like this, so it made the lip glow that peachy color and i grabbed the phone to take a pic.

I like to backlight my orchids too, especially more pale coloured ones or multi such as this. it adds more contrast, but your's looks beautiful with or without. It is very pretty. The shape reminds me of a Miltoniopsis hybrid and the colours like an Oncidium.

I love Equitants!!! I remember getting compots of them from Richella Orchids in Hawaii. I really don't know if anyone did any hybridizing with them until Richard Mizuta started working with them. They are so variable that you can get a dozen of one cross and have each one very different. Add to that the fact that you can put those dozen in the space of one standard Cattleya. Not much fragrance but no complaints. I hope one day to be breeding them.

Pavel, you might need to give them more light if the plants are otherwise healthy. Mine got about the same as Cattleyas.

these are in the same light as my encyclia, brassavola, dendrobiums and vandas. they are happy with the tips and edges of the leaves turning a nice reddish color from too much sun. i have had blooms in a south facing window through 70% shade cloth in winter with my larger oncidiums. but now i leave them outside, as moving them back and forth caused noticeable stunting to new growths. by leaving them outside they have performed much better in even growth size and much larger spikes.

Coeruleo, I only say this because I honestly think it's true, but I do believe you have learned to do a lot of things right with your orchids and are very in tune to their needs. Your cultural information strikes me as 'right on'. It seems to me that much of the general cultural information out there should allow a lot of room for varience. AL

thanks al. i definitely go through some trial and error and i figure the only way to know for sure is to try. some experiments go well. but i have truly been rough on some orchids.
