Is this a keiki growing from my epidendrum ratican?

I thought keikis grew from the spike where the flowers bloom, but this one is on the stem and it's getting pretty big. I don't want to remove it if it's not a keiki. Also, where do the flower spikes appear on these epidendrums? What you see on the right is a plant I saved.

Yes. Epidendrum radicans usual method to produce keiki's. You can detach and repot it when the root is more than 3-4 inches.

This is a normal growth habit for Epidendrum radicans and many other reed stem Epis. It could be called a keiki, but I think that term is better reserved for vegetative growth in a location that would normally be reproductive growth (flowers) or at least a growth in an unusual location. This is not unusual, it is normal and quite common, though the primary position of new growths in Epis is from the base of the plant. In terms of using a non-basal growth to propagate a plant, it can certainly be treated like a keiki and not hurt the plant at all. Normal spike formation will occur as a continuation of the top of the growth, a terminal spike.
