Here is my Rlc Sharon King 'Yuki' in bloom last year at this time

My one other post here so far is of a Cymbidium tracyanum that I bought in bloom and its rebloom this year is much darker (and I like it better). Then there's this, in which this year's rebloom is lighter! (and I like it better).

I guess this is a result of conditions. I've written to Akatsuka Orchids to ask which is the typical form. Honestly, why does anyone even show a photo of a plant's flower when they sell it, if the result is so dependent on conditions?!

That is quite the colour! Buying seedlings can be even more of a mystery. They might turn out to look exactly as pictured but sometimes nothing like it. Occasionally, if you're lucky, much better.

I have notcied differences in color in subsequent blooming as well. Most of them are lighter. I am guessing because they are growing under very bright,warm conditions.

Hi - what plants are you referring to? This exact one? Rlcs generally? Catts generally? All plants?

On another cymbidium-focussed forum, it was posited that brighter light, and maybe warmth, causes the plant to react by producing MORE pigments - so more saturated and darker, not less. And I have plenty of plants that don't appear to be getting ready to bloom this year - even though they have roughly equivalent light and conditions. I'd hoped that I was giving them lots of light and would be reaping the rewards in blooming plants.

I have to say, the fact that you really have no idea what kind of flower you're going to get is, to me, pretty cool. You buy one thing, get what you thought you were buying, and then the next time you get a mystery flower! Of course, I wouldn't like it so much if the bloom was less to my liking......
