    Default Experiment over Paphios

I had 2 paph virens with the emerging spike blasted so sad after awaiting for few weeks, than come the idea to expose the matured Paphs with potential spike formation. The specimen are viren, volonteanum, venustum, unknown species and phrag hybrid.
    Method
    1. Select the species as above.
    2. Expose them with the temperature at 22C( Air conditioned) for 5 to 6 hours.( 7 pm to 12 midnight) enclose space in living room.
    3. The next morning put them under normal ambient temperature and light
    4. Exposed for the duration of 2 to 3 weeks
    5. Fertilize them as normal schedule once or twice a week.

The end result is awesome most of the above species producing spikes. Now I can enjoying those Paph from intermediate for its flower in my house.

Dr Zain- Thanks for that research info!

I haven't moved any Paph's outside for the summer before, sounds like I should. I have the perfect temps day and night to get Phal's to spike. My temp spread should be good for Paph's too.

So the conclusion of this experiment is temperature drop at night is responsible for Paphio blooming. Surprisingly the temperature of air-conditioner is not very cold. But it puzzles me because now is rainy season at Selangor at least for the past 4 weeks (not sure about Melaka), so the temperature difference is not very large either. Very exciting experiment!

You can't argue with success. Nicely done.

It may not be that the temperature drop is specifically triggering flowering, simply that the plants are somewhat stressed without a significant nightly temperature drop even though the daytime temps are not out of their range. The cooler night temperature gives them a chance to rest some physiological processes. Remove the stress that was inhibiting flowering, and the results may be significant.

You are very lucky Harvey as your night temperature is very low and good for the Paphio.

I have three Paphs as houseplants. One I got late last summer, it bloomed in the fall. The other two I've had for 3 and 2 years and both are coming into bud, one about to bloom any day. I grow them under lights and don't do anything with the temperature (we keep the house pretty evenly warm for my mother in law - she'll be 92 in Feb! and lives with us). I can't wait to see them bloom.
