Not too sure what it could be... there are many orchids that cost thousands of dollars, but for specific reasons (newer species, being first to propagate a certain species, well known species that is limited to a handful of plants, awarded cultivars, odd forms, one-time collections, etc.)... sorry I'm not much help, unless there's a grower name, story, location, etc. to further specify...
