Ain't it true? I would love to be able to grow catts easily. On the UK board I hardly get an answer re cool growing species, but if I post my new chids, you all drool over my cool growers!Having limited funds I don't have warm growing species, but there is alot of snobbery on the boards, is this an English thing? Noids from the supermarkets are despised, but as decent plants from orchid nurseries are the equivalent of $60 including postage I cannot afford plants from them.In actual fact I got a miltonia red tide and bullgheara Nelly Iser __ today for $18 equivalent. That is a billy bargain in the UK! I may call in on my way to work tomorrow! But how will I sneak them past OH if I do? Answers on a postcard please! JUdi

The group of people here at OrchidTalk are a special mix on new growers and advanced growers. The one thing we all seem to have in common beyond our orchids is our willingness to help and share with each other. I am glad you are a part of our group!

About getting more orchids: I say do it. You could always remind your OH that if you got just one at a nursery that it would be $60, so getting three or four or eight will satisfy your need to get more orchids for a longer time.... or if your OH prefers, you could just get all of them from a nursery...heheheheh

Oh, so far all of mine are lowly noids too! But then again I don't hang out with any orchid people in Germany, so I wouldn't know it even if it was snubbed. I just get frustrated not knowing what to call things sometimes (I think I am going to call them whatever I want though, since it doesn't really matter anyway).

I also have not yet made it into the named plant territory, though now I know of two places where I might go. I have however found out that there is going to be some sort of show/exchange in the city come September and I fully intend on being there with a camera (I hope there isn't some regulation against that....). Could be dangerous!

Anyway, I guess for me it is just more about the flower and the plant, which is what I think is pretty cool about this board - everyone seems to really just like the plants!

I guess the old timers here all know that I hate all the fuss about names and nomenclature... It's nice to have a 'real name', but I also have given pet names to my favorite plants. I just figure a noid is a named plant that the tag fell out of... and I have a few "named" plants that lost their tags during repotting that I won't know what they are until they bloom. Love em all.

OK, I'll admit it, I am a "Name Snob." Is that worse than a "Species Snob?" I am one of those too. I just don't let it affect how I think about other's tastes and tendencies. Well, I guess you can replace the "Snob" with "Person" then, right?

Some plants are too pretty to hold the lack of name against them. I also have my share of Noids

Sorry...I am tempted to remove the noid phals in the house and get new named ones, so I am a 'name snob' (if you haven't noticed already). However all the noids are my mothers so I can't remove them. One reason is I want to attempt to show the plants, I just have to work on the perfect bloom. Other reason named plants can be re-sold easier when it is time to give them up.

But noids make wonderful starter plants for newbies... who usually appreciate getting a plant at a lower price to "practice" on.
