    Also it can be in the breeding line.Some plants will do it out of habit and when these plants are crossed with those that dont ,they resultant can do it from time to time.

    Its just like crossing the bi-folate and the unifolate.The resultants plants can produce iether on leave or two

    I have had ones do that and believe it was secondary to what Murray said!!

    Four years ago I bought a seedling of Arctic Star 'Snow Queen'. Just last year after throwing out one growth per year, it bloomed without a sheath. This year it has 2 new growths (baby's all grown up) the first looks like it will have 2 buds and no sheath, the second has a nice big sheath ready for buds. I'm hoping both will bloom at the same time. Attached is the first blooming of this plant. Perhaps it is maturity that encourages sheaths.
