I looked up both snakes mentioned, but i'm not sure. They eyes of those two snakes seem much smaller to me and I cannot find a picture of either with the orange spots on it's belly. They eyes on this snake are very large for it's head.

Corn and rat snakes are incredibly variable. Their coloration is meant to help them blend into the background and they have a very wide range. So coloration can differ significantly among individuals...much like orchids of the same species from different locations. He's good to have around!

I didn't think to mention in that last post, be sure you are looking at pics of juvenile snakes.

Yep, its a juvi southern corn snake. I used to raise them, and sometimes they are known as rat snakes. Pretty little thing. I only see black racers around my neck of the woods.
Cheers,
Tony
This little snake maybe a useful visitor and yes he looks rather benign and detached from the whole situation. AL
Don't know what it is other than gorgeous!
Glad to know he's a good one...thanks for the id everyone!
Well gents, it appears we were incorrect on the ID.Accessing my snake contacts in the herp underground, the ID verdict was as immediate as it was unanimous -- the cute lil fella is a baby black racer (Coluber constrictor). (And not at all surprising, really, since -- if I am remembering correctly -- you've had a number of racers around your place, Connie.)
That would explain why the darn thing was so fast. I just had two racers on my porch last week, is it possible this one just hatched? Thank you very much for the help with the i.d. I like to know what kind of creatures I need to be careful of around here as i'm a transplant from up north where we usually had almost no bugs and snakes to worry about.
