Snake visitor....

I looked up both snakes mentioned, but i'm not sure. They eyes of those two snakes seem much smaller to me and I cannot find a picture of either with the orange spots on it's belly. They eyes on this snake are very large for it's head.

Corn and rat snakes are incredibly variable. Their coloration is meant to help them blend into the background and they have a very wide range. So coloration can differ significantly among individuals...much like orchids of the same species from different locations. He's good to have around!

Yep, its a juvi southern corn snake. I used to raise them, and sometimes they are known as rat snakes. Pretty little thing. I only see black racers around my neck of the woods.

Rat snake? I'd guess he's finding lots of stuff to eat. We had a couple black racers up on the porch the other day as well. I'm going to have to be a litte more careful picking up pots. They seem to be everywhere lately.

Accessing my snake contacts in the herp underground, the ID verdict was as immediate as it was unanimous -- the cute lil fella is a baby black racer (Coluber constrictor). (And not at all surprising, really, since -- if I am remembering correctly -- you've had a number of racers around your place, Connie.)

That would explain why the darn thing was so fast. I just had two racers on my porch last week, is it possible this one just hatched? Thank you very much for the help with the i.d. I like to know what kind of creatures I need to be careful of around here as i'm a transplant from up north where we usually had almost no bugs and snakes to worry about.
