Lighting is everything. I find direct sunlight is hard to work with, however. It's difficult to get true colors. Flashes do the same. Bright indirect light, with proper color balance is what you want, but that's sometimes easier said then done. And try different lighting angles. I usually snap a lot of choices and then select the one or two that look best.

I was able to control the light by pointing the camera at a brighter object, and lock the exposure, then re-aim at the plant and press the shutter. You can also adjust the exposure compensation to make it brighter or dimmer.
