S/H is a culture method where the orchids are planted in a container containing inorganic media--usually expanded clay pellets. Instead of having regular drain holes at the bottom of the pot, there is a "reservoir" of about an inch of water which remains at the bottom and is gradually wicked up by the media. Lots of plants take to it because of the even moisture they get and the air around their roots. It's easier to make sure they have the right amount of water, and it goes a little longer between waterings than regular media (at least for me). The inorganic pellets don't break down like regular media does, and so you don't need to repot until the plant outgrows its pot. Those are the basics, but there are many places to read more about it.
