Splitting while in spike?

I have very large dendrobium that looks like it's grown to opposite sides of it's pot and the middle is pretty much half gone. While it's in spike and in bud can it be split if there is an obvious place to split or will it mess up the blooming cycle??

Cane dendrobiums are not as sensitive to being divided when in bloom compared to other orchids.
As long as the cut does not occur on the blooming cane itself (perhaps 2 or more rhizome segments away), and there are plenty of healthy or new roots on the blooming cane it should be safe to divide it.

Yes, be sure that the orchid is large enough to divide. Usually three + growths is as small as you would want to go.

What I do some times with Catts. not done it with Dends. if there is a clear spot cut while still in the pot then when done blooming divide it . Gin

It's huge...thanx all! I will be splitting it then. It's got like a dozen p-bulbs with three in spike and I would like to be able to share it with a friend down here that loves Dens.
