transplant - suggestions for new orchids

Hi all! I have just made a huge move across the country....from auburn, al to sonoma county, ca! Unfortunately (for me anyway), I felt I had to leave all of my plants to a friend. Glad I did actually....border patrol inspected EVERYTHING and they would have been smashed. This climate is relatively new to me considering that I came from hot, humid hell. I want to replenish my plant collection and was wondering if any of you have suggestions? I have no air conditioning. And what seems to be only minimal heating. Thoughts?

new location, new challenges... luckily, there are a number of folks on the forum from Ca, so bet they can give great suggestions.

Hi Jason,

Wow, Sonoma, CA. I was there last year in April (actually in San Francisco, but visitied Sonoma). It was amazing. Anyway, if you ever go to SF (not that far) visit the Fairy Building on the Embarcadero. You'll be blown away!

I have wonderful pictures, but I can't seem to post any...it says "I'm not allowed"...hmm.

I thought that I remembered some folks from CA here....and to slyjester, i visited before I moved out. Went to sanfran and it was beautiful! I will certainly take your recommendation. I actually am only a half hour or so from sanfran.....rohnert park. It's a pretty cool place so far. I did manage to find an orchid "farm" here but apparently it isnt open to the public.....but! there is a really cool carnivorous plant nursery very close to me! new hobby???

Hi Jason, I previously lived in Solano county and did okay with cymbidiums, kept them in the shade during the summer, but outdoors year round. Keep us posted and good luck!
