Okay. I've had this plant for two years now. It was a bag baby mericlone from a big box store. The flower picture was taken two weeks ago. When it opened, my heart stank. I instantly thought virus on this one. I was right. I sent a sample off, and it was confirmed. CMV!

The plant is uber healthy and shows no sign of distress. However, I put it out in full sun and it's pretty cripsy now and won't be infecting anyone anytime soon. I'm just wondering if a whole bunch of these got infected in the mericloning process.

Other than mess up the flowers...what else does the virus do? Will it eventually kill the plant?

Eventually..might or might not. I didn't want it to hang around though and infect my other floofies even though I practice good cultural technique.

awww, sorry to hear about that Clint... it's such a shame and how unfortunate that these nasties (virus) plague our hobby... hopefully, you may be able to find another of these sans problem.

Can CMV affect all orchid genuses or some more than others?

Nothing. Attached is a picture of the quarantined plant when it first bloomed on my kitchen table. Not as much as a black mark, a yellow spot or anything anywhere..that's why it was such a heart-breaking surprise. It grew vigorously, the buds aren't malformed or twisted..just a shocker. Tie dyed floofy catts are no good!!

I know Phals, Cymbs, Oncids, Catts and Dends get it. I'm not sure if Paphs are susceptible to any virii.
