Dendrobium ceraula

Blooming Dendrobium ceraula season and also Epigenium stella-silvae and Dendrobium auriculatum from my garden...

My Dendrobium ceraula were taken from the forested slopes of Mount Mayon last December 2009 and later the volcano erupted.

I'm so glad to have these plants before it will be gone to extinction if there will be possible strong volcanic eruption that would burn everything within the slopes.

Its very difficult to propagate Dendrobium subgenus Calcarifera. They prefer in cool, humid and dry. If they are over watered, they get easily rotten.

They are good to plant from seeds.

I will be pollinating them to collect their seeds and have them planted along the wild Dendrobium crumenatum (Dove orchids), I notice the tiny dove orchid were stimulated by a certain fungus in the bark of coffee trees. I will try once the plants will get fruited.

I know Mayon volcano, it has a beautiful shape, but is quite dangerous. I was there in April 2008, one year after previous eruption the place has looked horrible.
This Dendrobium grows also there. Do you know the name?

Hi lanhua,

Your orchid is a Dendrobium heterocarpum.
The Southern Luzon variety is slightly fragrant than the Northern Luzon variety.
They are variable species.

Hi Decoy,

The true Dendrobium heterocarpum does not occur in the Philippines. Dendrobium heterocarpum has short brown hairs covering the whole upper surface of the labellum. The apex of the labellum also curves under.

The species from the Philippines is Dendrobium rhombeum, a validly published name. This is the plant illustrated above.

There is also another species in this complex group of orchids, which Dr. Mark Clements and I named last year, as Dendrobium velutinelabrum. It has white flowers with a very pointed apex to the labellum. The flowers and the plant are considerably larger than those of Dendrobium rhombeum.
