I was looking in wiki for the meaning of the name Paphiopedilum
usually in the begining of each article if it is a latin word they explain from where it came, does any one know why this genus is called Paphiopedilum?

I was looking in wiki for the meaning of the name Paphiopedilum
usually in the begining of each article if it is a latin word they explain from where it came, does any one know why this genus is called Paphiopedilum?
If I remember correctly pedilium is latin for shoe/slipper- their blooms are commonly referred to as slipper-like. Paphio is a latin nickname for the goddess Aphrodite, based on the town she was supposedly born at.
So, this orchid Genus is named Aphrodite's Slipper....
