Hi,
About a year and a half ago I bought a small compot of 4 large seedlings. One at that time was in spike. The cross is Phal. Brother Pirate King x Phal Salu Peoker. I potted them up individually and they have all been doing well. The question I have is that one seedling keeps producing keikis instead of spikes. Last spring, about 3-4 months after purchase I noticed that it was spiking. That spike turned out to be a keiki. The keiki grew much bigger than the seedling and I did end up potting it on it's own thinking I needed to save the seedling. I repotted it as well and it has a wonderful root system, just small leaves. It seemed to do well through the winter and a wonderful surprise it looked like it was spiking again. Again now that spike has turned out to be another keiki. I have it in good lighting and all my 20+ other phals spike and never produce keikis. It's sister seedling is now spiking for the second time. I had actually moved the seedling to higher light when I saw the little spike/keiki appear thinking that the higher light would give me a spike instead of a keiki.
Any thoughts as to why this seedling is producing keikis? What can I do to have it give me a spike? Would love to actually see the flower on this phal, but may now have to wait until the keikis flower.
