Den bigibbum (phalaenopsis) semi-peloric form

I was recently given this dendrobium by a friend who had brought it in from Thailand. The flower is relatively quite big, 2.5 inches across on an 7 in tall plant. It seems that peloric forms dendrobe are very popular now in thailand.

I find it extremely difficult to believe that this plant is Dendrobium bigibbum. The labellum and it's ornamentation is like nothing I have ever seen in this species.

@ Jim Cootes: My sentiments exactly. I told my friend the same thing but he said the Thai vendor gave him the name. I believe that it might be a hybrid with the alba form of bigibbum and as is the practice in Thailand is simply called by the name of the parent that it most resembles (in this case round shape and colour) : thus at one time most purple, round dendrobiums were commonly referred to as ' Madame Pompadour'. My friend also informed me that in Thailand 'pelorism' is induced while cloning dendrobes. He gave me another plant today to show the extreme 'pelorism' that has been achieved.

@Ron; I don't know. I think Den Anucha Flare has the flared lip but tinged with purple at the fringes.

yes there are, most of them are in the Chinese and Japanese communities. However I dislike these extreme forms! some of these fugly orchids are highly valued and rare, and have their own collector markets. There are expensive fugly chinese cymbidiums (especially ensifolium) out there. Not my taste

I like the semi peloric form as in the white dendrobe but the extreme form is really bizarre and downright ugly on par with the extreme bulging eyed, pot-bellied, extravagantly long-fringed finned goldfish ( what a mouthful!).

I accepted the extreme peloric dendrobe because it was a gift - plus it's a good conversation piece. Heheheheh......
