Here is a photo of the only vini out of a number of seedlings I bought of the same cross! This is the second blooming and it is MUCH improved over the first time around!

Very nice! I've found that, 90% of the time, the second blooming is almost always an improvement. First blooms can often come out deformed--a real freaker-outer if you've never experienced that.

Are you saying that the vini color paphs are like harlequin phals? Some in a grex come out that way, but most don't?

Louis, a friend got a Trader Joe paph I picked up when I got this one (both were in bud - first bloom). When it opened, the entire right side of the lip was missing. Very freakish! You're suggesting it sould calm down next time around?

Very nice ....I have seen improvement on my second bloomings as well. Dorsal presented better,etc.

Julie, yes, it should definitely stabilize.

These vini Mauds are definitely all over the place in terms of what they end up looking like. They're not like harlequins in that they'll change color / spotting between seasons, since one particular clone here seems to more or less maintain its coloration. But their first blooms can very often just wind up deformed for whatever reason, a situation that usually rectifies itself over the next two or so growths.

Piper, out of 20 or so siblings, this was the only solid vini. None of the others were anything close to this vini.

Louis is right, the first blooming is seldom a good representation of what the blooms will grow up to be! Vinis will always be vinis though. I've recently bloomed a number of plants a second time and they were superior to the first bloom. Prior to this, I was ready to pitch poor stock but now I wait for a second or third bloom before I make the final judgement.

Here is a photo of a number of the siblings of this cross during the first blooming that was posted earlier. There was one solid vini, one near vini, two nice green/whites, and the rest were coloratums or whatever the correct word is. They looked much like your plant but will all different shapes and sizes. (The complex toad at the back, a Churchill cross was not part of this grouping) Check 'em out at:
