I went to the Genessee Region Orchid Auction yesterday, it was SO exciting!! I was in Orchid heaven. I won an auction for this magnificent Brassia. It smells so yummy. Now I have to look through my books and figure out what will make it happy.

Brassias have about the same needs as Oncidiums. They do best in moderate light and will sometimes get spots on the leaves if the light is too bright. They need more light than phals, but still do well in the home. You made a great addition to your collection.

I added a mini cattleya to my collection at the last OSO orchid auction. I will take a photo of it and post it soon. It is growing in a wooden basket and is out of control. I just love it!

How about water? Do they like it often or about once a week? Should I have humidity tray with pebbles? Thanks.

Hi Orchidtraci!

I was away for a long weekend; sorry for the delay in replying to your post. Your humidity tray is great for all indoor orchids. For your brassia, you will want to water it as often as it takes to keep it medium/damp-dry but not wet. They should never be allowed to dry out completely. Hope this helps!

That is the problem, it is so overgrown I can hardly see the medium !! I know there are rocks on the top , but I cannot see any medium. I was planning on repotting it . I should wait until the flowers are done and fallen off , correct?

It's ok you didn't hop right on the question, I know orchids aren't the delecate flowers they have the rep for.

Hi!

You should enjoy the flowers for now. When they are about done, you can cut the spike off (about 1 1/2" long) and divide the plant. You could also just put it in a larger pot. If you choose to divide it, be sure to leave at the very least three old growths in each pot. If possible leave a new growth in the division too. This way the plants will bloom again quicker. For complete information check out the care section of this website. Louis explains in some detail how to divide an orchid. He also explains what medium to repot the plant in. Hi,
It is in the Brassia fam, the tag says :

Brsdm. Stan's Monneyey Brsdm. Lillian's Oka (I think, it is worn a bit) "Hawaii"

It is a delicious lemony/ jasmine scent. It fills up the room with its scent!
